Queensland Smoke Alarm Compliance
Is Your Home Ready for the 1 January 2027 Deadline?
Queensland’s smoke alarm laws are changing, and from 1 January 2027, all existing domestic dwellings in Queensland must meet the updated smoke alarm requirements.
Whether you’re a homeowner, landlord, property manager, buyer or seller, making sure your property is compliant isn’t just about meeting legislation — it’s about providing better protection for the people inside your home.
At Infuse Electrical, we can inspect your existing smoke alarms and provide professional smoke alarm installation and upgrades to help ensure your property meets Queensland requirements.
What Are the Queensland Smoke Alarm Requirements?
To meet Queensland’s smoke alarm requirements, required smoke alarms must:
- Be photoelectric
- Comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014
- Be interconnected, so when one alarm activates, all required alarms activate.
- Be less than 10 years old
- Operate correctly when tested
- Be hardwired to mains power where required, or otherwise use an approved non-removable 10-year battery
- Not contain an ionisation sensor
Where Do Smoke Alarms Need to Be Installed?
Compliant smoke alarms are required:
- Inside every bedroom
- In hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home
- On every storey of the property
- Where there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and the remainder of the storey
- On a storey without bedrooms, in the most likely path of travel towards an exit
Correct positioning is also important. Smoke alarms must be installed in accordance with Queensland requirements, including appropriate clearances from lights, ceiling fans, air-conditioning vents and corners.
The 1 January 2027 Deadline
Don't Leave Your Smoke Alarm Upgrade Until the Last Minute
From 1 January 2027, all remaining domestic dwellings in Queensland must have compliant interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.
This includes existing:
Homes | Townhouses | Units | Manufactured Homes
Properties being sold or leased are already required to meet the upgraded smoke alarm requirements.
With the deadline approaching, now is the time to check your property and arrange any necessary upgrades.
Hardwired Smoke Alarms
If your property requires hardwired smoke alarms, they must be connected to the electricity supply by a licensed electrician.
Where an existing hardwired smoke alarm needs to be replaced, Queensland requirements generally require it to be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric alarm.
Infuse Electrical can assess your existing system and determine what is required to bring your property up to the applicable standard.

Why Interconnected Smoke Alarms?
Interconnected alarms provide an important additional level of warning.
If smoke is detected by one alarm, all interconnected alarms throughout the home will sound.
This means a fire starting in another bedroom, downstairs, in a hallway or elsewhere in the property can trigger alarms throughout the dwelling, giving occupants more warning to respond and evacuate.

If your smoke alarms are old, aren’t interconnected, aren’t installed in every required location, or you’re simply unsure whether they meet the current Queensland requirements, we can help.
